So why am I here and why are we doing this?

The point of all of this isn’t to solve it for you. Or for me.

Some things are genuinely unsolvable. Unpredictable. Unpreparable — which, yes, I know is not a word, but stay with me.

We live in a moment when circumstances can change faster than institutions respond to them. Governments move slowly. Systems get overwhelmed. Information arrives incomplete, contradictory or late.

So what do we do with that?

My hope with No One Is Coming is that we think about it together.

Not all at once. And not with the expectation that every episode ends with a tidy answer and a downloadable checklist.

Instead, we can take a problem apart. Imagine a scenario. Ask what worked, what failed and what we might do differently. Think through a course of action even for something that may never happen to us.

Because practicing the thinking matters.

It is much easier to make a useful decision under pressure if you have already considered some of your options before you need them. When the moment comes, you might be in a situation where no one else can make that first decision for you.

The more often you imagine your way through uncertainty, the better equipped you are when something happens that you never imagined at all. Not catastrophizing. Just giving your brain room to stretch and consider possibilities.

That’s also why the subjects on this show can vary so wildly.

This season we’re talking about search and rescue, crowded rooms, pandemics, scams, ships, UFOs and fear itself. Some of those stories come straight from the headlines. Others are old ghosts I’ve wanted to chase down for years. The world is wild. The show matches that energy.

I’ve had the enormous good fortune to do that with people who really know what they’re talking about: search-and-rescue teams, fire marshals, crowd scientists, epidemiologists, historians, investigators, astronomers and others who have spent years looking at risk from very different directions.

They don’t always agree. That’s part of this too.

There usually isn’t one clean answer waiting to be uncovered. Different people see different risks, carry different experience and make different calculations. The show leaves room for that — including the parts that remain unresolved.

And preparation isn’t only about protecting yourself. The more capable you are, the more useful you can be to the community around you.

We’re already filling the notebook for Season 2 — superbugs, earthquakes, and, if I get my way, a zombie apocalypse.
